10 Things You Need To Know Before You Lose Your Virginity

Every day here at Gurl, we get questions from you guys asking about losing your virginity. They’re about all sorts of things, like what it’s going to feel like, how to do it and how to know when you’re actually ready to do it. I get it – losing your virginity can seem pretty terrifying. Going into the experience with no idea what to expect is even scarier.

Obviously, everyone’s first time is going to be different, but there are still some things everyone should know before they lose their virginity. These tips will help you get through the experience without being SO nervous because you’ll have a better idea of what’s going to happen. And that’s always a little comforting, right? Here are 10 things you NEED to know before you lose your virginity… and remember the most important one: have fun!

It WILL Hurt, But It Won't Be That Painful

I get tons of questions from you girls asking if your first time will really hurt. Truthfully? Yeah, it's going to hurt a little - but it's not going to be an awful, horrible pain that you can't live with (unless something is wrong). It should just feel like a lot of pressure in a sensitive area. To make it less painful, take things slowly and don't be too rough or fast. Don't force yourself to try out a bunch of crazy positions during your first time - just be careful. And, seriously: it will hurt more if you're more nervous, because your body tenses up. Try to relax!

Your First Time Might Not Feel That Great

Honestly? Your first time might feel really anti-climatic. I know mine did. Once it was over, I was like, "Wait, that's it? That's what everyone obsesses over?" I was really disappointed and felt like this is what it would be like the rest of my life. Fortunately, that's not true. Your first time usually isn't that great because one, it hurts and two, if you're with another virgin, you guys don't know what you're doing. After time and experience, you'll figure out what makes it feel great for you.

You Might Bleed, You Might Not

The reason a lot of girls bleed during their first time is because it's also the first time they broke their hymen. However, it's possible to break your hymen before that, through sports or another kind of injury or something like that. Personally, I didn't bleed. But if you do, don't be embarrassed. It's completely normal and it's not like you'll be drowning in blood, it's just a little.

You'll Learn As You Go

Another question I get very often is how to have s3x the first time. I know this is a frustrating answer, but it's true: you'll learn as you go. You can read up s3x tips, but everyone's firs time is different with different circumstances. I know it sounds scary to go into it unprepared, but once you're doing it, you'll somehow just know what to do and where to go. And you'll figure out more through time.

Do What You Can To Get More Comfortable

Because your first time might be awkward, you should do what you can to make yourself feel comfortable. If that means having the lights off, keeping your shirt on or staying in one position the only time, so be it. Don't do things you don't want to do because that will only make you more uncomfortable.

It Will Be A Little Awkward

Even if you're totally in love with your partner and you're not that nervous, s3x will be awkward the first time. Actually, s3x is always sort of awkward. It's no big deal! It's weird when you think about it, you know? Laugh off any strange things that happen and just relax. You'll have much more fun if you embrace the awkwardness.

You Should Just Let It Happen

I know people who plan out their first time down to a T. They plan it a few days or weeks in advance and decide where it will be, how it will happen and what they will do. I don't think this is a good idea. Planning it in advance only makes you more nervous because you can't stop thinking about it. Also, plans always go wrong in some way, so you're bound to get disappointed. It's best to just let things happen when they happen.

It Won't Always Be A Memorable Experience

Losing your virginity isn't always going to magical. Sure, for some people it is - but for others, it's not that special. I lost mine to a long-term boyfriend, but to tell you the truth, I don't really remember it. It just wasn't that memorable. I used to feel bad about it, but now I don't. A lot of people build up their first time to be this incredible experience, but that might disappoint you

It's Okay To Express What You Want

Don't be afraid to speak up during s3x! I know that it took me a long time to tell a dude what I liked, but once I did, it was so much better. Don't be shy. Guys love when you take control and tell them what to do.

You Should Do It Only When You're Ready

Like we always say here at Gurl - have s3x when you're ready. Don't force yourself to do it, don't be pressured into it. Do it when you feel like it's time.
